My wife and I just returned from an extraordinary three-day trip with Yumbo Explorer. Arcenio set up an excellent itinerary that catered to our specific interests. We visited seven different refuges and identified 120 different species of birds.
This was easily the best guided birding trip we have ever been on. Arcenio is a gifted birding guide. He developed an itinerary that ensured that we saw a huge diversity of species. He was right by our side throughout the trip, identifying species by sight and song with ease, and sharing knowledge about each species and its habitat. We also learned during the trip that Arcenio actually studied to be a guide in university, and his preparation showed. He was able to sprinkle in information about history, culture, and the landscape as we traveled. We learned a ton about natural topics well beyond birding. For instance, he shared in-depth knowledge around frogs, bugs, and flora. Perhaps most impressive is that Arcenio was not overbearing in how he shared this information. He seemed to be able to match our tone and mood. He left time and space for silent reflection, and gave us the ability to define the pace at which we wanted to move through the trip.
Arcenio also organized all the lodging, meals, and transportation. We had no worries. We were able to simply relax and enjoy the truly extraordinary experience. I'm looking forward to referring friends and coming back for more trips with this wonderful outfit.

We were lucky enough to spend a day with Yumbo Explorer earlier this year, with Arcenio and Ana making sure we had the best experience possible.
The itinerary was planned around our interests (wildlife and photography) and the team used their in-depth knowledge of the area and wildlife as well as their local connections to give us a day full of unique encounters with the wildlife at Zuroloma birding reserve.
Everything was made easy for us with a personal pick up and drop off at our central Quito hotel, a great breakfast eaten in the company of hummingbirds, flower piercers, tanagers and a myriad of other beautiful birds, a successful search for the elusive Equatorial Antpitta and the white throated screech owl and finally a great lunch with the team during which we could reflect on the variety of beautiful species seen.
We came away feeling privileged to have been to such a hidden gem of a place - we certainly would not have got there on our own - with some great photos and, most importantly, wonderful memories which will make us smile for years to come.
We would certainly link with Arcenio and Yumbo Explorer again, should we be lucky enough to revisit this little piece of paradise.
